Are your rust removers solvent or water based?

All of our Rust Removers are Water Based.
BRO,BROL, BROG They all contain water as the carrier for the active ingredients. The water evaporates and leaves a Rust Inhibitor Coating. In the BRO the active ingredient is Phospholiqnonate, which turns black on oxidation. This is the protective layer that will prevent further rusting. In the BROL and BROG the active ingredient is Phosphoric Acid, which forms a complex of iron phosphate, which then prevents further rusting

Prevent "SOLVENT POPPING"

This happens very infrequently. However when you notice this action taking place it means that you are applying the product too heavily. To prevent this "solvent popping" from happening please apply the product in light coats holding the can at least 12" from the surface. Allow each coat to flash off (about 20 seconds) and gradually build it up.
As these products are rubber and synthetic rubber based. A thick coating is NOT required.
Two or three light coats is much better than one heavy coat.

How do I remove Gator Guard or Hippo from my hands?

Gator Guard is an epoxy base product that hardens over about 12 hours. A good safe solvent will help or a hand cleaner with an abrasive added to it will definately help. However the real answer is that GLOVES should be worn when applying the product.
"HIPPO" is a urethane based product and again,GLOVES should be worn. To remove "Hippo" from your hands the same rules apply as with "Gator Guard".
Both products will come off completely after a few days once they have hardened. They are harmless to the skin.

Gator Guard & Hippo: Getting different textures

With either Gator Guard or Hippo Liner you can achieve different textures by the following:
Spraying: Schutz Style Gun ("BUPA")


- Smother - If you apply a wet or heavy coat - the product will flow out more compared to a light to medium coat. Be careful not to apply to much. A wet or heavy coat is applied with the gun closer and with the the air pressure between 40-50 psi. A wet coat should not exceed 15 mls. If you use high pressure over 65psi and apply a wet coat a slightly different type of texture will be created. You should test to see which type you prefer.

- Texture - Apply either Gator Guard or Hippo Liner in a medium coat. Spray to cover. The coarseness of texture is achieved by your gun distance and air pressure. A good air pressure is between 50-55 psi. If any streaking is evident upon completion of first coat, Apply a light high pressure cross coat to the bed of the truck. This high pressure cross coat will create a finer texture on the bed liner and eliminate any streaking.

- Smother - If you add 5% Sure Solv to Gator Guard or 5% High Quality Fast Urethane Grade reducer to Hippo Liner this will slightly thin the products and you can achieve a smoother texture. Do not use anything slower than Fast Urethane Reducer in Hippo Liner. With the addition of the solvent both products will flow out better providing a smoother texture.

- Smother - Hippo Liner sprayed out of a gravity feed primer gun. By using a gravity feed primer gun Hippo Liner will be atomized finer and lay out flatter than using a Schutz gun. Caution: Hippo has a short pot life. Use and clean gun immediately before the product sets in the gun. Pot life is 30 minutes at 75 degrees with less than 40% humidity. Warmer temperature or higher humidity will shorten the pot life. Mixing both quarts of material at once will shorten pot life too (1/2 gallon). Caution: If you try to spray Gator Guard out of a primer gun - the silica sand has a tendency to plug the tip. Due to the tip usually plugging up I do not recommend this.

Rolling:

-Texture - If you roll either Hippo Liner or Gator Guard with the roller sold with Hippo Liner or sold by Dominion Sure Seal you will get texture. The roller is designed to provide texture. Caution: Using the Roller sold by us with Gator Guard, the roller may deteriorate from the solvents in the product. Caution: When using the Roller sold with Hippo liner or any other roller with Hippo Liner, mix up only enough product that you can use within a 15-20 minute time period at 75 degrees and less than 40% humidity. Hippo Liner will start to thicken after that time period and continuing to try to roll the product can cause the roller to start to deteriorate. The product will thicken and have "drag" while rolling. This "drag" will start to pull the roller apart. If this happens you will need a new roller to finish the job. Higher temperatures or higher humidity will shorten your work time.

- Smother finish - go to a hardware store and purchase a short nap (1/4" or less) roller that is solvent resistant and can be used with both epoxies or urethanes. Apply the product by rolling the product. Avoid additional rolling of the product. If the product starts to thicken and you continue to roll the product you can start to get a fine texture from the roller pulling the product. See the Cautions listed above for rolling times.

Recoating: Hippo Liner

- If an additional coat of Hippo Liner is needed you need to wait until the last trace of solvents have evaporated and before the product sets. This is approx. 2 1/2 to 3 hours at 75 degrees with less than 40% humidity. You need to recoat during that time window. If you allow the product to come out of its soft stage you can have intercoat adhesion problems. If the temperature is higher or the humidity is higher the recoat time will be shorter. If you do not recoat the product right after the "tacky" stage, your second coat may peel. Caution: If unsure about the recoat time, wait for an overnight dry and scuff the surface to remove the gloss (using a red scuff pad), blow the sanding residue off, re-clean with a good quality wax and grease remover, then apply a second coat.

Recoating: Gator Guard

- Gator Guard can be recoated if necessary. However, thicker is not better with Gator Guard. Recommended film thickness is 10-12 mls. Call your local Dominion Sure Seal Representative or our Corporate Office for details.

Drying/Curing:

- Both Gator Guard and Hippo liner should not be exposed to water or moisture for a minimum of 24 hours at 75 degrees with less than 40% humidity. If either product is exposed to water or moisture during the initial curing process "blushing" may occur. Blushing will vary depending on the amount of moisture that the products are exposed to.

- Both Gator Guard and Hippo Liner can be accelerated by the use of heat.

- For Dry to the touch, drive away, light duty and full cure see Technical Specifications listed below.

Bedliner Application Mixing and Masking

BEDLINER APPLICATION TIPS.

1. MASKING: For masking - use car sheathing (such as available from Fiberglass Evercote or Norton). You can cover the whole truck for about $1.50. You will only have to use 1 piece as it will cover the sides, the cab, and when you trim the excess off of the sides it makes your rear bumper cover as well. This process will save a lot of time when “prepping”, and it makes the clean up very professional.
2. MIXING: When mixing Gator Guard with a mixer it can be very messy, when mixing two BGG2 kits use an empty gallon paint can. Add both components to the can, punch a hole through the lid of the can for the mixing paddle, insert paddle and fasten to can. This will allow a much cleaner and quicker mixing process

Hippo and Colour Your Hippo Solvent Popping etc

1) Why do l get solvent pop when I roll Color Your Hippo?

A) Usually what you are seeing is not actually solvent pop. What you are seeing is air bubbles that have popped. This is caused by working the material to much with the roller. In other words rolling air into the material. The air bubbles get trapped into the material and as the product starts to cure they float to the surface and the top pops open looking like small and large solvent pops.

Suggestion - Do not keep rolling the material. Apply the bed liner with the roller by only rolling over the surface once or twice before the material tacks. If the texture is not what you desire or you do not have complete coverage, you should allow the product to set and apply a second coat. When rolling, two coats is better than one to achieve even coverage and texture.

If you apply a second coat please review instructions prior to applying a second coat.

2) My roller deteriorates before I can finish my first kit. Why ?

A) What is causing this is the material that has been mixed up has started to set or thicken. As the material sets it generates heat. By continuing to roll as the material is setting and getting hot causes the roller to be pulled apart and deteriorate.

You should mix up only enough material that can be rolled within the products work life or pot life.

Times are as follows:
1 quart of mixed material has a work time of 30 minutes @ 75 degrees F. with less than 50% humidity. An increase in temperature or humility will dramatically shorten working times. Example 1 mixed quart at 100 degrees F. will have a work time of less than 15 minutes.

If you mix up both quarts of material your work time listed above will be shortened by approx. 50%. Example - 2 mixed quarts at 75 degrees will give you a work time of approx. 15 to 20 minutes.

3) Can I tint Color Your Hippo with a universal tint from a hardware store?

A) These tints may be compatible but have never been tested. We only recommend single stage automotive paint tints because of the quality of UV resistance and the known properties and performance provided by the automotive grade of tints.

If any other tints are used other than what is recommended, we are not responsible for the performance or the results.

4) Con I tint Color Your Hippo today and use it tomorrow?

A) Yes. You can add up to 3 ounces of single stage automotive tint to the part B can only. Do not add the part A to the tinted part B until you are ready to use the product. If you add the part A to the part B and do not use the material within it's pot life it will set up in the can.
WARNING:
Since part A is the catalyst, if you add the tint to this part the tint will gel or set in the can and not be able to be used and mixed with part B.

Hippo Liner - Various questions

Dear Sir
I need some tech info on HIPPO, more than on your tech sheet.

I need film build per coat and maximum
Answer: ---- 10 -15 mils. If a second coat is needed allow all the solvents to flash but do NOT allow the coating to set and apply a second coat. If additional coats are need allow to dry. Sand and apply the additional coat. Do not apply more that 2 coats without allowing the bedliner to dry overnight.
Question:Which solvents it resists and which ones it doesn't
Answer: most solvents for short periods. Long term exposure to solvents can cause the material to swell and start to breakdown.
Solvent resistance:
MEK - Passes 100 Rubs

XYLOL - Passes 100 Rubs

Question temperature resistance
Answer: Max. 180 - 190 degrees. Product will soften if exposed to excessive heat for a long period of time. These temps. are for short intervals of under 1 hour. Normal maximum temperature range is up to 140-150 degrees F.
Question: UV resistance
Answer: Good.
After 168 hours of accelerated weathering in accordance with SAE J1960 HIPPO showed very little to no change in gloss.
After 239.5 hours panels still maintained a high gloss.
NB Original gloss can change depending on application conditions.
High humidity or water in the air lines can produce a loss in gloss during application.

BCG4 Crystal Clear Anti Stone Can I reduce this product?

Reduction is not necessary. Even though this is a high solids product and normally sprays with a moderate amount of texture, this texture will flow out producing a smoth high gloss finish. Reducing 5% is permissible using a high quality urethane grade reducer.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: Can I mix this product by weight on a scale

This product was formulated to be mixed in equial parts by volume. It is very important to mix it in this fashion. Equal parts can be measured out by volume and then weighted separately if desired. When weight of each has been determined and recorded future mixes can be mixed by weight.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: How soon can I buff this clear and what should I use?

Normally this product does not require buffing as it retains its high gloss. Allow 36-48 hours before buffing. The longer you wait the better it responds to buffing. Sand with 1500 grit high quality sandpaper and buff at 1500-1800rpm with a fine polishing compound on a foam pad.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: How does this clearcoat react if gasoline is spilled on it?

This clearcoat is very resistant to gasoline as well as other solvents; once it has achieved total cure.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: Can I color or tint this clearcoat?

Tintability has not been tested at this time, so no. Tinting is not recommended at this time. Future testing will determine if tinting is ok.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: Do I need special equipment to apply this clearcoat?

No special equipment is needed for this clearcoat. The same equipment used for any high solids clearcoat will perform well with this product.

Crystal Clear Anti Stone: Can I bake this clearcoat.

Our tests have shown that there are no adverse affects to baking, however we do not recommend product is baked over 150 degrees F.
